2010 Summer Games and Torch Run, A Huge Success

For the 39th year, the 2010 Special Olympics Ohio’s Summer Games were held at Ohio State University. The games, once again, went off spectacularly thanks to the thousands of volunteers, fans, and of course, athletes. Our 2,600 athletes competed hard all weekend despite the heat in eleven different sports. The nearly 3,000 volunteers worked all weekend at nine different venues to make 2010 the biggest Summer Games yet.

Kicking off the opening of Summer Games 2010, was the Final Leg of the Torch Run. This yearthe Torch traveled on more legs carried by more law enforcement than ever before to travel over 1,000 miles to the stadium on June 25th. Daquan Johnson and Jeff Brewer, Cleveland Public Schools and Franklin Goodwill athletes, carried the Torch the final meters around the track. We would like to thank all the participating law enforcement for their tremendous efforts and the Kroger Company for their support as our Presenting Sponsor.

Could We Pull A Plane?

Yes we could. In fact, this first time event proved a monumental success with 23 teams participating in pulling a Boeing 737 at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Over 400 people raised money to participate on teams of 20 to see who could grunt, sweat, and drag the plane down the runway the fastest. Team Gorilla Pit pulled the fastest in the men’s division at 5.72 seconds and Dina’s Pizza won the Co-ed division in 6.69 seconds. The effort raised about $20,000 for Special Olympics Ohio, a great first time event. The Cleveland Police Department was the largest fundraising team of the day, raising $2,673 for Special Olympics. A huge thank you to all those that participated and volunteered. Planning is already underway for next year, so stay tuned for more Plane Pull announcements.
